In today’s increasing digital world, access to technology and the internet is essential for making Alameda County Age-Friendly. Ensuring older adults and individuals with disabilities are digitally included is key to enhancing their quality of life and promoting equity. Past challenges, like those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, revealed digital isolation rooted in limited access to devices, reliable internet, or the skills to navigate online systems safely. By addressing these barriers, we empower this population to lead more connected and informed lives, strengthening all 8 Domains of Livability through initiatives that bridge the digital divide.
Making sure older adults' voices are heard in Alameda County
From April 2021 through March 2022, the Alameda County Council for Age-Friendly Communities (Age-Friendly Council) circulated a brief survey of older adults that live in our County. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated existing problems faced by older adults, including inequitable access to digital resources. The survey's purpose is to look for gaps in access to the internet and electronic devices, and the need for educational support to use those devices. It asked older adults about the level of access they have to the internet in their homes, as well as how they typically use the internet.
